The Star Sailors League is an international regatta circuit designed to promote the athletes and the sport in an innovative and simple format. Founded in January 2013, the SSL was awarded a “Special Event” status by WS in October 2017. Star Sailors League organises elite championships with substantial prize money to celebrate today’s heroes and to honor the legends of our sport. It is born from a desire to offer sailing champions a simple, economical and efficient platform from which to showcase their exploits to a global audience. Celebrating the stars of yesterday and today while creating those of tomorrow is the vocation behind the Star Sailors League, a circuit that seeks to be part of sailing tradition while making it more “pop” and more attractive to the public.
A STRATEGY IN 3 POINTS
• SSL designs a scenario to stage the sailing season, like the ATP Circuit that beginns “regular” and ends with breathtaking “masters”.
• SSL broadcasts its sailing events to a world wide audience.
• SSL markets customized articles inspired from football and/or American major sports.
4 FEATURES TO SUPPORT THE ANNUAL SCENARIO OF THE SSL CIRCUIT
• 1 GLOBAL RANKING
SSL finalize an annual circuit with a weekly RANKING of all the athletes of the world which counts all the regattas inshore of small boats (> 100,000 SAILORS FROM > 70 CLASSES).
• 4 GRANDS SLAMS
SSL introduce 4GS regattas (with prize money) that brings together the best athletes to pace and boost the season in power (inspired by the tennis ATP model).
• 1 ANNUAL FINALS
SSL concludes each season in the form of a fire by organizing a global SSL FINALS (with prize money) that brings together the best athletes of the season and legends of sailing.
• 1 SHOWCASE EVENT = SSL GOLD CUP
SSL promotes all the circuit towards a world audience by organizing a show case event every 2 years inspired by the football world cup. SSL GOLD CUP event (with prize money) brings together all the world’s sailors on big boats and aims to make sports fans proud of their national athletes.
SSL GOLD CUP: A TOP SPORTS EVENT & A TOOL TO ATTRACT THE AUDIENCE
As mentioned on the previous pages, SSL aims to promote inshore sailing’s stars with an ultimate level competition (the SSL Gold Cup) inspired by the Football World Cup and used as a showcase event to appeal to sailors, sports fans and the general public. If everything goes as planned, it is likely that the SSL Gold Cup will generate an unprecedented audience for inshore sailing, perhaps even higher than that of the America’s Cup or the Olympic sailing competition. However, an isolated media spike in June 2022 would not meet our goals, as the ultimate goal of SSL is to maintain an audience threshold throughout the season.
SSL CIRCUIT: A TOOL FOR ENGAGING THE AUDIENCE
To engage the public, and build loyalty, SSL continues the development of its circuit by drawing inspiration from major sports such as hockey, football, and tennis. And precisely, studying the model of these organizations confirms the passion of the general public for systems that award points at the end of each competition, and for the concepts that crown each year champions after play-offs. Thus, the media success of major sports is not due to the magic foot of Neymar or the arm of Nadal, but above all to the simple and breathtaking scenario that structures their seasons. SSL was inspired by the same scenario to design its circuit.
SSL RANKING: A COMMUNICATION TOOL COMPLEMENTARY TO CLASS RANKINGS
From 2019, a wide range of class race results will be gradually integrated into a weekly world ranking inspired by the ATP tennis ranking. At the end of the season, it will qualify the best in the world for the annual final of the circuit (with prize money), and every two years for the SSL Gold Cup.
The SSL Global Ranking does not replace the rankings specific to each class but completes them, to offer a simple and attractive overview of inshore sailing to the general public; the SSL Global Ranking will bring together nearly 100,000 athletes in 2021 and will be used as a communication tool in 2019 to promote athletes and the sailing season.
